The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has detained several officers accused of extorting ₦5.2 million from a traveller journeying from Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State to Akure, Ondo State.
This action follows a directive from the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who called for an immediate investigation into the incident after it gained traction through a viral post on social media.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by NSCDC spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale, the Commandant General of the Corps, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, described the conduct of the officers as “unprofessional” and a breach of the Corps’ Code of Ethics and Standard Operating Procedure.
“The Commandant General has ordered that the accused officers be taken into custody and transferred to the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja,” the statement said. “A disciplinary committee has also been constituted to thoroughly investigate the matter.”
Dr. Audi assured that any officer found guilty would face appropriate sanctions in line with the Public Service Rules. “There will be no room for misconduct under my leadership,” he said. “We will ensure that integrity and transparency are upheld at all times.”
He further appealed to the public to continue cooperating with the Corps by providing credible information, stressing that citizens should not fear intimidation or extortion.
“The public is encouraged to speak up. We are determined to rid the Corps of any bad eggs and hold our personnel accountable,” Audi affirmed.
The NSCDC reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on corruption and misconduct, vowing to uphold public trust through decisive action.
