The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria has disassociated itself from the planned “Take-It-Back” National Protest, calling on Nigerian youths to maintain peace, avoid violence, and continue to engage in lawful and constructive activities.
In a statement issued by the NYCN President, Isah Abubakar, the Council reiterated its commitment to youth empowerment and the promotion of national unity, expressing serious concern over the rising tensions in various parts of the country.
“We are deeply concerned about the escalating tensions across various regions and the current socio-political climate,” the statement read. “As an organization committed to the empowerment and development of Nigerian youth, we understand their frustrations and aspirations. However, we believe that the nation currently requires calm, dialogue, and patience, not actions that could further destabilize our fragile peace.”
While acknowledging the grievances motivating the calls for protest, the NYCN insisted that Nigeria’s stability must take precedence.
The group cited previous protests, including the End Bad Governance movement, which, according to the Council, was hijacked by hoodlums and led to the loss of lives and widespread destruction of property.
“We urge our fellow young Nigerians to unite not through protests, but through constructive engagements that foster meaningful, lasting change. No one desires a repeat of past tragic events,” the statement continued. “It is crucial that we come together to build a stronger, more inclusive Nigeria.”
Reaffirming its commitment to collaboration with government institutions and relevant stakeholders, the NYCN said its goal remains to create peaceful avenues through which youth voices can be heard.
“Let us work together to build a nation where our rights are respected and our voices are heard,” the Council added.
