The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria, has called on the federal government to urgently address the escalating violence in Plateau State, which has claimed dozens of lives in recent weeks.
In a statement released on Tuesday in Kaduna, the council expressed deep concern over the persistent bloodshed plaguing communities in the state. The group’s National President, Isah Abubakar, urged the federal authorities to act without delay in protecting lives and restoring peace.
“We are deeply disturbed by the continued loss of lives in Plateau State,” Abubakar said. “The government must go beyond mere condemnation and ensure that those behind these atrocities are apprehended and prosecuted.”
Their statement comes in the wake of President Bola Tinubu’s condemnation of the recent attacks, which reportedly left over 40 people dead.
The President also called on Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to demonstrate strong political will in resolving the crisis and fostering long-lasting peace.
“The violence stemming from ethnic and religious tensions must stop,” Tinubu stated. “It’s imperative that the state government takes decisive steps to end the cycle of bloodshed.”
Echoing similar sentiments, the Christian Association of Nigeria described the killings as a major threat to Nigeria’s unity.
CAN President, Daniel Okoh, called for immediate and firm intervention by security agencies and urged the federal government to strengthen protection for all affected communities.
The NYCN also called for collective efforts among youths in the North to stand against violence and division.
“We must not allow these forces of destruction to tear our communities apart,” Abubakar said. “Now more than ever, Northern youths must unite in the pursuit of peace and hold leaders accountable for their inaction.”
