The League of Northern Democrats has renewed consultations to fine tune its strategies for a political renaissance in northern Nigeria in the face of what it described as existential threats.
Towards this end, the political movement convened a special meeting which was chaired by former Kano State Governor, Mal. Ibrahim Shekarau at the Yar’adua Centre, Abuja.
The meeting confirmed the appointment of Shekarau and Hon. Emmanuel Jime, as Chairman and Secretary respectively as well as the constitution of a Steering Committee and five sub-committees.
A communique issued at the end of the meeting stated that decisions taken at the meeting include: “Undertaking high-level consultative visits to key stakeholders of the North such as former Presidents, traditional and religious leaders, business leaders, retired officials both civilian and military, etc to court their bye-in to the leagues activities.
“Structuring the LND’s leadership by the formal confirmation of Mal. Ibrahim Shekarau, former Governor of Kano State, as its substantive chairman and Hon. Emmanuel Jime, former Honorable Member House of Representatives from Benue State, as its substantive secretary;
“Constituting a standing Steering Committee and five Subcommittees as follows:-
Standing Steering Committee chaired by Sen. Ibrahim Ida (Wazirin Katsina).
And the subcommittees created are also as follows:-
“Contact and Mobilization, chaired by Dr. Ja’afar Bello Dambazau from Kano state;
“Programs Planning & Logistics, chaired by Alh. Danjuma Ibrahim from Sokoto state; Media & Publicity, chaired by Dr. Ladan Salihu from Bauchi state; Intelligence & Security, chaired by AVM Monday Morgan from Benue state; and Events and Protocol, chaired by Amb. Mohammed Hassan from Borno state. As former DG of the FRCN, Dr. Ladan Salihu is also appointed as the Spokesman of the League.”
The League also fixed 12 and 13 November, 2024, as the dates to hold the Northern Nigerian Summit in Kaduna.
It explained that the approved summit has two main objectives. First is for it serve as a fulcrum around which to knit Northern unity,security and leadership.
“And secondly to proffer viable northern solutions to the existential challenges facing the northern region in three key areas – disunity, insecurity and poverty.”
The communique was jointly signed by the League’s convener, Umar Ardo, Ph.D and Hon. Emmanuel Jime, Secretary.”
