The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has forecast widespread thunderstorms and heavy rains across various parts of the country from Sunday, April 21, through Tuesday, April 23, 2025.
In its weather outlook released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet said residents in several regions should prepare for localized thunderstorms and advised caution to minimize weather-related risks.
“From Sunday, isolated thunderstorms are expected in parts of Taraba, Adamawa, and southern Kaduna states, especially during the afternoon and evening hours,” the agency stated.
The North Central region is expected to experience partly cloudy conditions in the morning, with thunderstorms predicted later in the day in areas including Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger, and Kogi.
In the South, cloudy skies are forecast for the morning in states such as Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Delta. However, thunderstorm activity is expected to intensify by afternoon and evening across Anambra, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Imo, Abia, Ekiti, and Bayelsa, among others.
On Monday, NiMet says northern Nigeria will experience sunny skies throughout the day, with exceptions in parts of Adamawa, Kaduna, and Taraba where afternoon or evening thunderstorms may occur.
“Sunny skies with few clouds are expected across the North Central region during the morning. Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms are anticipated over parts of Plateau, FCT, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, and Nasarawa,” the agency added.
The South will experience mixed weather patterns, with early morning storms predicted in Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River, followed by thunderstorms later in states such as Lagos, Ondo, and Anambra.
Tuesday will bring continued sunny conditions to the North, with minimal chances of storms in Taraba. Isolated thunderstorms are forecast for the afternoon and evening in parts of Adamawa, Kaduna, and other North Central states, including Benue and Kogi.
“In the South, cloudy skies will dominate the morning, with a likelihood of thunderstorms later in Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Edo, Cross River, and Delta,” NiMet reported.
As heat levels rise, NiMet advised the public to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun during peak hours, and take measures to prevent heat stress.
“Strong winds may accompany thunderstorms. We urge residents to take safety precautions. Airline operators should also ensure they obtain accurate weather reports for safe flight planning,” the agency emphasized.
Health advisories were also issued, warning of heightened risks of heat-related illnesses and airborne infections. “We recommend vaccinations against meningitis, maintaining hygiene, and avoiding overcrowded spaces. The use of nose masks is also advised,” NiMet concluded.
