A fire broke out this afternoon at the bustling Gbagi Market in Oyo, damaging two shops before emergency response teams swiftly intervened.
The blaze was brought under control within minutes of the distress calls, preventing further destruction.
The General Manager of Oyo State Fire Services, Akinyemi Akinyinka confirmed that the fire department received alerts around 1:23 p.m. from officers at the Gbagi Station, the Divisional Police Officer, and market leaders.
He stated, “Our team arrived at the scene by 1:30 p.m. The fire had engulfed two shops, but our men were able to control it quickly, and they are still cooling down the area.”
Though investigations are ongoing, the cause of the fire remains unclear. No casualties have been reported, and authorities are working to determine the extent of the damage.
The incident at Gbagi Market comes amidst growing concerns over fire safety across Nigerian markets, underscoring the need for enhanced emergency preparedness in such areas.
