The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has issued a forecast predicting three consecutive days of moderate to heavy rainfall across six states, raising concerns over possible flash floods and other weather-related hazards.
According to the heavy rainfall forecast bulletin released on Tuesday, April 8, the states expected to be most affected include Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Bayelsa, Delta, and Ogun. The anticipated rainfall will occur between Wednesday, April 9, and Friday, April 11, 2025.
In addition to these six states, NiMet also projected light to moderate rainfall in Ondo, Lagos, Delta, Imo, Abia, Ekiti, and several other parts of the country. However, it noted that many other regions would likely experience either very light rain or no rainfall at all during the forecast period.
The agency emphasised the potential for flash flooding in areas where moderate to heavy rainfall is expected, warning residents and commuters to remain cautious. It also highlighted additional risks, including strong winds that may accompany the downpours.
NiMet stated, “Avoid driving through surface runoff waters, as they may have strong undercurrents.”
The agency further cautioned the public about hazards such as slippery road surfaces and reduced visibility during rainfall, which could lead to traffic disruptions. It also warned that strong winds might damage weak structures, trees, and communication masts.
As part of its safety advisory, NiMet urged residents to take preventive measures: “Disconnect electrical appliances before the rains begin, not during.”
