The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, has predicted a mix of sunshine, cloudiness, and isolated thunderstorms across different regions of the country from Tuesday to Thursday.
According to a weather outlook released on Monday, the agency forecasted mostly sunny skies over the northern region on Tuesday, with patches of clouds and possible isolated thunderstorms later in the day, especially in parts of Adamawa, Kaduna, and Taraba states.
For the North Central region, NiMet projected a blend of sunshine and cloud cover with slight chances of isolated thunderstorms in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Nasarawa, and Kogi in the morning. These storms are expected to extend to Niger, Plateau, and Kwara states later in the day.
“In the southern part of the country, thunderstorms are likely in the morning over Cross River and Akwa Ibom,” NiMet stated. “By afternoon and evening, isolated thunderstorms could develop over Imo, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Abia, Anambra, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom states.”
On Wednesday, the northern region will continue to experience sunny conditions with minimal cloud cover. However, isolated thunderstorms could occur later in the day over Kebbi, Zamfara, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, and Kaduna states.
“Across the North Central region, the morning will bring sunny skies with cloud patches, while thunderstorms are expected in parts of FCT, Benue, Kwara, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Plateau states by the afternoon and evening,” the agency forecasted.
The southern region is expected to witness cloudy skies mixed with sunshine, with morning thunderstorms likely over Ogun, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, and Bayelsa states. By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms could develop in Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Anambra, Enugu, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Delta states.
NiMet further projected that Thursday would bring predominantly sunny skies across the northern region, with a few cloud patches in the morning and isolated thunderstorms over Taraba later in the day.
“In the North Central region, morning sunshine will give way to isolated thunderstorms over Benue, Kwara, and Kogi states as the day progresses,” the report stated.
The southern region will experience cloudy conditions interspersed with sunshine. Morning thunderstorms are expected in Cross River, Rivers, Lagos, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom, while afternoon and evening thunderstorms may affect Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Ondo, Ogun, Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Edo, Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, and Rivers states.
NiMet advised residents to take precautions as high temperatures could pose risks of heat stress. “Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, stay in well-ventilated and cool spaces, and avoid peak sun hours between noon and 3 pm,” the agency recommended.
The public was also urged to get vaccinated against meningitis, maintain good hygiene, and avoid overcrowded spaces to minimize the risk of infections.
“Strong winds may precede thunderstorms, so people should take adequate precautions,” NiMet warned. “Airline operators should obtain airport-specific weather reports for better flight planning.”
