The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has told those aggrieved with the outcome of the presidential election to seek redress in the court.
In a welcome-back address on Tuesday, Gbajabiamila made this call, adding, those aggrieved must avoid actions or utterances that heat the polity and draw reactions that could be disastrous to Nigeria’s democracy.
Recall that opposing parties are criticizing the ongoing announcement of presidential election results.
Similarly, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has joined the call for the cancellation of the election.
Gbajabiamila pointed out that the constitution provides the process for challenging the outcome of the presidential election.
“The constitution of our republic and the Electoral Act that governs elections in Nigeria both define a framework of post-election dispute resolution and adjudication. This framework exists to protect the integrity of our elections.
“It ensures that when elections fail to meet expectations, contested issues of facts and law can be resolved through a due process within a legal framework befitting a constitutional democracy,”
He stated further that, “Nigeria will be at peace because we will work through the law and due process to resolve differences, settle disputes and ensure the peaceful transition of power.”
