A former Defence Minister, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (Rtd), has described Nigeria as a battlefield and a source of global embarrassment.
Speaking at the Nwonyo International Fishing and Cultural Festival’s opening ceremony in Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba state, Gen. Danjuma made an urgent call for unity and peace among Nigerians to improve the nation’s image and attract global investors.
During his speech on Friday, he highlighted the dire state of national security and community relations, stating, “There is no sane foreign person that will come to our country to celebrate with us if we continue to kill each other and make our roads unsafe for people to move around.”
“As we are today as Nigeria we are a disgrace to the whole world. The country is a war front where our people are against our own people.
“We must put our house in order because right now we are a laughing stock to the whole world.
“We must stop killing each other. We must make our roads safe. We must stop kidnappings.
“If we are expecting this festival to be truly international, we must have peace in our state and throughout the country,” he added.
Gen. Danjuma also commended the Taraba state government for rejuvenating the festival after a 14-year hiatus, highlighting its role in promoting cultural values and bringing communities together.
Also present at the festival, Adamawa State Governor, Umar Fintiri, praised the event as a catalyst for unity among states and pledged to collaborate with Taraba to ensure the festival’s ongoing success.
Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State spoke about the festival’s importance in promoting the state’s cultural wealth to the international community and reaffirmed his commitment to revitalizing other traditional festivals to foster unity among the diverse ethnic groups within the state.
