Niger Republic military has named former economy minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine as the country’s new prime minister.
This is coming two weeks after the nation’s military seized power from its democratically elected president, Mohammed Bazoum.
The announcement of the prime minister was made on Monday evening by a spokesperson for the military junta.
Lamine Zeine was formerly the minister of economy and finance for several years in the cabinet of then-president Mamadou Tandja, who was ousted in 2010, and most recently worked as an economist for the African Development Bank in Chad, according to a Nigerien media report.
It would be recalled that the ultimatum given by the Economic Community of West African States for the military junta to reinstate its ousted president, Bazoum, expired over the weekend.
