President Bola Tinubu has announced that his administration will soon submit an executive bill to the National Assembly to establish a new national minimum wage for workers.
This announcement was made during Tinubu’s second Democracy Day speech, delivered on June 12, 2024.
The background to this development involves extensive negotiations with Organised Labour, reflecting the administration’s commitment to addressing the concerns of Nigerian workers. Tinubu highlighted the collaborative efforts in his speech, stating, “In this spirit, we have negotiated in good faith and with open arms with Organised Labour on a new national minimum wage.”
He further assured that the government is taking concrete steps to formalize these agreements. “We shall soon send an executive bill to the National Assembly to enshrine what has been agreed upon as part of our law for the next five years or less,” the President said.
The proposed legislation is intended to solidify the new wage structure, ensuring its implementation for the next five years or less. This move underscores the government’s dedication to enhancing the living standards of workers across the country.
