President Bola Tinubu has invited the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress to a meeting at the Aso Villa on Thursday to discuss the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
According to sources, the President is expected to address the government’s proposal of ₦62,000 and the Organised Labour’s demand of ₦250,000.
This meeting follows President Tinubu’s announcement on June 12 that an executive bill on the new national minimum wage would soon be presented to the National Assembly, according to Nigerian Tribune.
Recall that the Minimum Wage Act of 2019, which set the minimum wage at ₦30,000, expired in April 2024.
The Act requires a review every five years to align with contemporary economic demands.
Despite efforts by the Tripartite Committee established in January, no agreement has been reached on a new minimum wage, leading to an indefinite industrial action by Organised Labour in June.
Labour unions argue that the current minimum wage is insufficient to support the average Nigerian worker, considering inflationary pressures and recent policies.
The meeting on Thursday aims to resolve the impasse and find a mutually acceptable solution.
