In a last-minute effort to prevent a nationwide strike, the leadership of the National Assembly is meeting with executives of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.
The emergency meeting, called by the principal officers of the federal parliament, aims to address the labour unions’ demands on the national minimum wage and electricity tariff hike, according to ThisDay.
With the strike set to commence midnight Sunday, NLC Chairman, Joe Ajaero, and TUC Chairman, Fetus Osifo, are already seated at the meeting venue in the Senate wing of the National Assembly.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and House of Representatives Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, are expected to join the meeting shortly.
The labour unions are demanding a new national minimum wage and a reversal of the recent electricity tariff increase.
The meeting’s outcome will determine whether the strike will go ahead as planned or if a resolution can be reached to avert the industrial action.
More details shortly.
