The former speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, has dismissed the rumors that he will quit Congress before his term ends in 2025.
He faced a revolt from both Republicans and Democrats who voted him out of the speaker’s chair this week.
“I’m not resigning,” he said on Friday, repeating himself for emphasis. He also confirmed that he will seek another term in the 2024 elections. “Yes, yes.”
Some media outlets, such as Politico and CNN, reported that McCarthy is thinking of leaving Congress early, or that he will do so after a new speaker is elected.
If he resigns, he will avoid serving as a regular member of Congress, after losing his powerful position as the speaker.
McCarthy gave up his bid to remain as the speaker, after Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz’s resolution to remove him passed this week. Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry took over as the temporary speaker, and will oversee the elections for the new speaker. Republican Rep. Jim Jordan and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise have announced that they will run for the speaker’s role.
McCarthy has been a member of Congress since 2007, when George W. Bush was the president.
