Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has underscored the essential contribution of Nigerian workers in driving the country’s progress and achieving its developmental aspirations.
In a statement released in celebration of the 2025 Workers’ Day on Thursday, Atiku called on the Federal Government to view the labour force not just as an economic tool, but as critical collaborators in the nation’s advancement.
“The Nigerian worker remains the indomitable engine driving our nation towards the long-anticipated promise of prosperity,” he stated.
Despite enduring poor working conditions and insufficient compensation, Atiku praised Nigerian workers for their resilience and unwavering commitment to the nation’s growth.
He criticised the government for not matching this dedication with meaningful action.
“It is deeply disheartening that those entrusted with the responsibilities of governance and policymaking have failed to respond to this unwavering dedication with tangible support and justice,” he said, urging for more accountability from those in power.
Atiku described workers as the heart and strength of the country, urging policymakers to ensure the protection of their rights and welfare, which he identified as the foundation of a more just society.
“The labour force is the soul of our nation. It is both the face and the force of the people. Therefore, it is imperative that governments and employers alike put in place robust safeguards to uphold the dignity, rights, and entitlements rightfully due to every worker,” he added.
He concluded by calling for a collaborative mindset among leaders and employers, urging them to treat workers as full partners in the nation-building process.
“I urge policymakers to take inspiration from the theme of this year’s celebration and to engage with the labour force not as a mere instrument but as an equal partner in the journey towards national greatness,” he said.
