The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees has urged the federal government to grant financial, administrative, and political autonomy to local governments.
According to NULGE National President, Ambali Olatunji, this autonomy is crucial for Nigeria’s economic growth and addressing insecurity.
Olatunji emphasized the need for community policing, where local governments take the lead in policing their communities.
He believes this approach will prevent crimes and address insecurity more effectively, according to Peoples Gazette.
Additionally, Olatunji called for the federal government to create policies tackling unemployment at the local level.
He advocated for reviving vocational skills acquisition departments in local governments, which would empower women and youths in rural areas through training and skills development.
By granting autonomy to local governments and focusing on community policing and vocational training, NULGE believes Nigeria can improve its GDP, enhance security, and better serve its citizens.
Mr Olatunji who spoke in an interview with journalists said, “We must make local governments to be financially, administratively and politically autonomous.
“We must consider community policing so that there must be guarding at the community level.
“Our policing policy should not be reactionary, but pre-emptive to be able to address insecurity.
“Our opinion is that the local government must be the platform for policing evolution in Nigeria.”
