The Lagos State Chapter of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria has announced plans for a 24-hour protest on May 1, in response to what it describes as exploitative practices by several ride-hailing platforms including Uber, Bolt, and inDrive.
In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by the union’s Public Relations Officer, Steven Iwindoye, AUATON revealed that its members would log off from all ride-hailing apps during the protest, halting operations to press home their demand for better treatment and respect for their rights.
Iwindoye explained that the union’s grievances include poor remuneration, arbitrary deactivations, safety concerns, and hazardous working conditions.
Other issues highlighted include high commission rates taken by the companies, insufficient vetting of riders, enforced facial recognition systems, and a raft of exploitative company policies.
He said companies such as Uber, Bolt, Lagride, inDrive, and Rida have repeatedly failed to acknowledge the concerns raised by the union, instead showing disregard for the welfare of their drivers.
“We have tried dialogue, and it has not worked; these companies only understand one language: the language of economic pressure,” Iwindoye said.
“By shutting down our services, we are sending a clear message that we will not be ignored or disrespected.
“After the shutdown, we will be following up with clear demands and a structured plan for negotiation.
“We will be working with media outlets, labour organisations, and other stakeholders to amplify our message and build support for our cause,” he added.
Calling for broader solidarity, Iwindoye urged for a global collective response to the hardships confronting app-based drivers, accusing the platforms of placing profits above people.
He said, “They have ignored our pleas for fair compensation, safe working conditions, and respect for our rights as workers.
“This is a global call to action, and we need your support. Let us stand together and demand the respect and fairness we deserve.
“Let us show these companies that we are not just individual drivers, but a united force that won’t be ignored.”
