Sevilla endured another heartbreaking defeat at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, this time succumbing to a 2-1 loss against Atletico Madrid, marking their second consecutive loss with an injury-time goal.
The defeat stretched their winless streak to six games, with Atletico’s late strike ending their own run of poor form.
The hosts went into the match without a win in their last five home games, their worst such run since a similar eight-match winless streak that ended in February 2024, when they managed a 1-0 victory over Atletico.
The game started brightly for Sevilla as they took the lead in the seventh minute. Ruben Vargas and Adria Pedrosa combined on the left, with Pedrosa sending a ball into the box.
After the clearance, Lucien Agoume unleashed a powerful shot into the top-right corner past Jan Oblak, marking his first goal of the 2024/25 season.
Sevilla nearly doubled their advantage soon after when Oblak had to make a quick save to deny Chidera Ejuke’s pass into the box, with the ball drifting away from a dangerous Agoume.
However, it was Atletico who found the equalizer in the 23rd minute. A penalty was awarded after Conor Gallagher was fouled by Loic Bade as he raced towards goal. Julian Alvarez stepped up and slotted the penalty into the bottom-right corner, sending Orjan Nyland the wrong way.
While Atletico were lifted by the goal, they too had a moment of fortune shortly afterward. Around the half-hour mark, Akor Adams was brought down inside the box by Oblak after receiving a great pass. There was a strong appeal for a penalty, but the referee waved it off.
The game became more evenly matched as both sides struggled to break the deadlock before halftime.
In the second half, Nyland was forced into a crucial save, reacting quickly to deny Giuliano Simeone after a defense-splitting pass. Atletico then began to assert more pressure, but Sevilla remained resilient in defense.
As the clock ticked towards the 60-minute mark, Sevilla’s intensity remained high, but their inability to regain the lead was evident.
Atletico’s Rodrigo Riquelme showed his class late on, but he was well-contained by Kike Salas, who made crucial interventions, including blocking a close-range shot.
Bade came close with a header that narrowly missed, but it was a missed opportunity that would cost Sevilla dearly. In the third minute of injury time, Atletico’s Pablo Barrios picked up the ball on a solo run and drilled a low shot past Nyland to seal the victory.
Once again, Sevilla failed to hold onto their early advantage, leaving them with little hope of securing a European spot for next season.
With eight games left, Atletico’s title challenge remains alive, but they sit seven points behind the league leaders, Barcelona and Real Madrid, who also dropped points earlier in the weekend.
