Athletic Club bounced back to winning form and strengthened their hopes of securing UEFA Champions League qualification with a 1-0 victory over Las Palmas in LaLiga.
Las Palmas had been riding high on the back of two consecutive wins that lifted them out of the relegation zone, but following a thrilling last-minute win over Atlético Madrid in their previous match, they were swiftly brought down to earth by Athletic Club, who took the lead in the sixth minute.
Inaki Williams showcased his skill, slipping past the Las Palmas defense before coolly finishing from close range to give his side the early advantage.
While still aiming for a top-five finish, Athletic’s primary focus seems to be on their upcoming UEFA Europa League semi-final, as evidenced by the early substitution of playmaker Oihan Sancet, a decision that underlined manager Ernesto Valverde’s priorities.
Las Palmas had their moments on the ball but struggled to create meaningful opportunities in the first half.
After a measured start, Athletic raised the intensity in the second half and nearly doubled their lead when Alex Berenguer’s header from an inviting Oscar de Marcos cross clattered against the crossbar.
With the game entering its final stages, Athletic maintained control and looked to secure the win with the introduction of star player Nico Williams.
Las Palmas’ attack had become increasingly isolated until substitute Adnan Januzaj came close to an equalizer with an audacious 25-yard half-volley that dipped and crashed off the crossbar.
That close call reinvigorated Las Palmas, with Jamie Mata and Marc Conda having shots blocked in quick succession as they fought back late on.
However, Athletic Club managed to see out the remaining minutes to secure the victory.
The result extends their remarkable form at San Mamés, where they have lost only once since August 2023 (W22, D12), and increases their lead over sixth-place Real Betis Balompié to nine points.
Las Palmas, meanwhile, remain just above the relegation zone, with their next match a home encounter against Valencia.
