Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged Nigeria to deepen its democratic journey to ensure prosperity and liberty for all citizens.
In a statement on Wednesday, Atiku acknowledged the sacrifices of past leaders who fought for democracy but emphasized the need for tangible benefits to reach the people.
He highlighted the importance of coalitions and alliances in shaping Nigeria’s democratic history, stressing the need for continued efforts to strengthen democratic institutions.
Atiku’s message came as Nigerians marked Democracy Day, reflecting on the country’s progress since transitioning from military rule, according to Daily Post.
His call to action underscored the need for improved governance and democratic delivery.
Taking to his verified X handle on Wednesday to commemorate the Democracy Day, Ariku wrote, “Whereas our current democratic dispensation is a quarter of a century old, it will not be out of place to pay tributes to the sacrifices made by many patriots, chiefly among them Basorun MKO Abiola and his beloved wife, Alhaja (Mrs) Kudirat Abiola, Tafida Shehu Yar’Adua and Alfred Rewane, among many others.
“It is important that all stakeholders continue to do their bit to ensure the sustainability of our democracy.
“But our democracy is not yet virile if it continually fails to deliver the promises of prosperity and liberty to the people.”
