The Israeli Government, on Sunday morning, unanimously approved the signing of an order to postpone local elections until 27 February 2024.
In a press release issued on the government’s official website, it state that the foregoing is pursuant to the Government meeting last Wednesday, December, 27 2023, at which the Government requested the IDF to complete the data on the number of soldiers who cannot be discharged and the local authorities in which they are running.
From the IDF data, it arises that the 688 reservists who cannot be discharged are running in 144 local authorities. The Government thus decided to postpone the elections.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the start of the Government meeting said: “We usually do not hold elections in wartime but these elections have been determined in advance. They have already been postponed once. While it would be very difficult to postpone them for a very long period, there are two possibilities: Hold them at the end of January or the end of February.
“My recommendation is clear: To do this at the end of February, in order to enable as many reservists as possible to participate in the elections. This is an elementary and important right.”
The decision is subject to approval by the Knesset Internal Affairs Committee and afterward the Knesset plenum.
