The Independent Electoral Commission has declared its readiness for the forthcoming Wednesday, February 14, 2024, rerun election in Enugu South Urban State Constituency.
Rex Achumie, the INEC Head of Voter Education and Publicity Department who made this known while speaking with journalists in Enugu on Tuesday, said adequate arrangements had been made for the exercise.
Achume assured that all sensitive materials from the Central Bank of Nigeria will be received in the presence of the political parties and all other stakeholders, by 3:00 p.m., on Tuesday.
According to him, the sensitive materials would be kept at the commission’s headquarters in Enugu, for distribution before 8: am on the poll day.
It would be recalled that a rerun election could not be held in the constituency on February 3, due to a lack of result sheets at the polling units.
Consequently, the rerun election was postponed to Wednesday, February 14, 2024.
Speaking about the poll, Achumie said, “We will also have effective monitoring and supervision as the bulk of our top management staff will be in the field to ensure that all goes well.
“We are calling on the electorate in the eight polling units in the Uwani axis of Enugu metropolis to come out en masse to cast their votes for their preferred candidates.”
The candidate of the Labour Party, Emeka Ngene and his opponent from the Peoples Democratic Party, Sam Ngene, would be contesting the 4,618 votes in Ward 5, where the rescheduled rerun election would be held.
Ngene, who polled 5,862 votes in the March 18, 2023 election, was declared the winner by the INEC and also issued the certificate of return.
While the Court of Appeal did not nullify the election results, it ordered a rerun in the ward due to some irregularities experienced during the poll.
