Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, and Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State convened at the Nigeria Governors’ Forum Head Office in Abuja today, led by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq.
The agenda for the meeting includes critical topics such as the proposed new minimum wage and the issue of local government autonomy.
Earlier, the governors had rejected the Federal Government’s proposal of N62,000 as the new minimum wage, arguing that several states would be compelled to borrow funds to meet such financial obligations. In contrast, organized labour persists in demanding a minimum wage of N250,000.
Following the Federal Executive Council’s decision to postpone discussions on the minimum wage, allowing for broader consultations led by President Bola Tinubu, the governors opted to convene an emergency meeting to address these pressing issues.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is still reviewing the Federal Government’s case against the 36 state governors, seeking to enforce full autonomy for local governments.
