Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has formally announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress, marking a major political realignment in the state’s leadership structure.
The development was confirmed on Wednesday after a high-level, closed-door meeting held at the Government House in Asaba. Governor Oborevwori’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, verified the news during a phone conversation with Vanguard, affirming that the governor had officially left the PDP for the APC.
In a related move, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa also dumped the PDP for the APC. His defection was disclosed by Senator James Manager in Asaba, shortly after an extensive meeting that lasted over six hours at the Government House.
Speaking on the outcome of the meeting, Senator Manager stated that all prominent PDP leaders in the state had unanimously agreed to cross over to the APC. He listed those involved in the decision as including Governor Oborevwori, former Governor Okowa, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, the PDP State Chairman, and all twenty-five local government chairmen.
“We cannot continue to be in a sinking boat,” Manager declared, highlighting the consensus among party stakeholders that staying in the PDP was no longer tenable.
The decision to join the APC reportedly followed prolonged consultations with key political actors within and outside the state. Sources close to the development say the move was driven by strategic considerations aimed at securing Delta State’s political and economic future.
Governor Oborevwori, who emerged victorious in the 2023 governorship election under the PDP platform, was formally received by senior APC officials on Wednesday.
