Award-winning actress, producer, and director Funke Akindele has opened up about the driving forces behind her phenomenal success in the Nigerian film industry, shedding light on her approach to work, emotional resilience, and the values that keep her grounded.
Renowned for her consistent dominance at the Nigerian box office with a string of record-breaking films, Akindele discussed the elements that contribute to her excellence during a conversation with media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo ahead of the WithChude live event scheduled for April 27.
When asked what fuels her consistent streak of blockbuster films, Akindele said, “I am very intentional with anything I am doing. I am an extremist; I am a perfectionist.” She also touched on the inspiration behind her return to the big screen following a break, reinforcing her deep-rooted commitment to maintaining high standards.
Addressing how she continues to reinvent herself in such a dynamic industry, Akindele explained, “Firstly, it’s spiritual—it’s God’s grace, knowing yourself, and being original. I know when to stop, and I also do not dwell on accolades, even though I appreciate them, but I don’t dwell on them.”
While talent plays a key role, Akindele was quick to point out that hard work is a non-negotiable ingredient for lasting success. She highlighted that the willingness to go beyond the surface and engage in the less glamorous parts of creative work is what distinguishes the great from the average.
“A lot of people want to do what I’m doing, but I keep telling them: for you to be outstandingly successful, you need to work hard. Do the dirty work,” she asserted.
The conversation also took an emotional turn when Jideonwo asked how she maintains emotional strength, especially in times of grief and personal hardship. Akindele spoke candidly about her recent experience of loss and the toll it took on her emotionally.
“I do not allow myself to break down, and it affected me after my mum’s death—my heart was aching. It’s necessary to process things and come back refreshed,” she shared, offering a rare glimpse into her private journey of resilience.
