The results of the recently held House of Assembly elections in Kogi state have been announced, with two female candidates winning the corresponding seats for the Ibaji and Ijumu constituencies in Kogi State.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mrs. Comfort Nwuchola and Mrs. Omotayo Adeleye-Ishaya respectively won seats for the Ibaji and Ijumu state constituencies.
Both Nwuchola and Adeleye-Ishaya were candidates of the All Progressives Congress in the said election in their respective local governments.
The African Progressive Congress candidate, Mrs. Omotayo Adeleye-Ishaya, received 8,568 valid votes, beating the African Democratic Congress candidate, Alaga Tokunbo, who received 3,899 votes, and the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, who received 2,648 votes, in the declaration of the results on Sunday at Iyara.
In Ibaji local government, Mrs. Comfort Nwuchola of the APC won with 7,718 votes, defeating the NNPP’s Peter Egwuda, who had 6,737 votes and finished in second place.
Since the start of the state’s democratic experiment, successful women politicians were the first women to represent their respective constituencies in the State Assembly.
It should be noted that the Kogi State House of Assembly will have two female lawmakers for the first time during the upcoming assembly.
There has only been three female members of the Kogi State House of Assembly, one at a time, since the first Assembly in 1992.
