Former South African President Thabo Mbeki has expressed disappointment in the lack of strong political will among current African presidents, which has hindered their ability to maintain Africa as a unified entity.
He encouraged them to learn from the successful relationship between Nigerian and South African musicians, who have created a thriving entertainment ecosystem through collaboration and strategic partnerships.
Mbeki made these remarks while hosting the third cohort of MTN-MIP Fellows at his Thabo Mbeki Foundation premises in Johannesburg. He emphasized the importance of political will in managing diversity and promoting pan-Africanism, citing Tanzania as an example of a country that has successfully implemented policies to promote unity.
He stated, “Political will to manage diversity is central to the survival of all of the African states… There’s got to be a conscious political decision.”
Mbeki also highlighted the regression from pan-Africanist commitment among current leaders, leading to negative consequences such as poor Visa regulations and frosty relationships between countries like South Africa and Nigeria.
He added, “The point is always being made about the relationship between the artists, Nigerian, South African artists, and what they are able to do.”
Mbeki encouraged leaders to address the larger political problems and promote cross-border trade and cultural exchanges to create wealth for Africa.
