Former member of the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan, has regained his freedom after completing a five-year jail term.
He was released on Tuesday from Kuje Correctional Facility in Abuja. Lawan had been convicted for accepting a $500,000 bribe from businessman Femi Otedola.
In a statement he signed after his release, Lawan expressed deep gratitude to God for seeing him through the difficult period. “Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life as I step out of Kuje Custodial Centre, with a heart full of gratitude to Allah SWT for seeing me through this trial,” he said.
He also thanked his family, friends, and associates for their unwavering support during what he described as a “particularly trying phase” of his life. “I remain grateful and indebted to my family and friends who stood by me through this particularly trying phase of my life,” Lawan added.
The former lawmaker now looks forward to reuniting with his loved ones, stating, “My gratitude is deep. I’m alive, in good health, and in high spirits to be with my family, friends, and associates. I don’t take that for granted.”
