Enugu State was plunged into mourning following the gruesome murder of Ejike Ugwueze, a promising aspirant for the chairmanship candidate of Isi-Uzo Local Government Area.
The tragic incident occurred on Friday night along Neke Odenigbo road in Enugu East Local Government Area.
According to eyewitnesses, Ugwueze’s vehicle was ambushed by unknown gunmen who unleashed a hail of bullets, leaving him dead in his Lexus SUV.
A chilling video clip circulating on social media shows the lifeless body of the politician, with bullet holes visible on the vehicle.
Police officials have visited the scene and commenced an investigation into the politically motivated killing, as alleged by the family and residents, according to Daily Trust.
The assassination has sent shockwaves across the state, casting a dark shadow over the upcoming local government elections in October.
“He is among the major contestants for the Isi-Uzo Local Government election,” the resident said.
The deceased, it was further gathered was a brother to late Chijioke Ukwueze, who died in June 2020 while serving as a member of the State Assembly.
The late lawmaker’s wife, Amaka Ugwueze, would later be elected to replace her husband in the House.
When contacted on Saturday afternoon, the police spokesperson in Enugu State, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incident.
According to him, the police were investigating the attack.
