Egypt’s President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has secured his third six-year term with an overwhelming 89.6% of the vote, as declared by the electoral commission.
Defeating three lesser-known candidates, his closest rival only managed to attain 4.5%.
Key opposition figure Ahmed Tantawy withdrew from the race months before the recent election, citing intimidation and violence against his campaign team as reasons.
The country’s struggling economy and the conflict in Gaza were significant focal points during the election.
A former army chief, Mr. Sisi, aged 69, initially assumed the presidency in 2014, following the military’s removal of his Islamist predecessor, Mohammed Morsi.
Having previously won re-election in 2018, this recent triumph will extend his tenure until 2030, after which the constitution prevents further candidacy.
