Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested 35 individuals suspected of engaging in cybercrime activities in Auchi, Edo State.
The operation, which took place on Tuesday, May 5, 2025, targeted several locations in the town, including Vigilante Street, Off Sabo Ibenafo Road, and the Back of Yak axis. The arrests were carried out following actionable intelligence linking the suspects to various internet fraud schemes.
In a statement released via the agency’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account, the EFCC confirmed the development, stating: “This operation is part of our sustained effort to rid the country of economic and financial crimes. The suspects were apprehended based on credible intelligence connecting them to online fraudulent activities.”
Items recovered from the suspects include nine vehicles, 11 laptops, 46 mobile phones, and two smartwatches, all believed to have been tools used in executing the alleged scams.
The EFCC added that the suspects are currently in custody and are being interrogated. “Investigations are ongoing, and they will be charged to court as soon as the process is concluded,” the commission said.
Auchi, a prominent town in Edo State, has been identified as a hotspot for cybercrime, prompting increased surveillance and intervention by anti-corruption agencies.
The commission urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report suspicious financial activities. “We rely on the cooperation of the public. Timely information is crucial in helping us clamp down on these crimes,” the EFCC noted.
This latest crackdown underscores the agency’s renewed commitment to combating internet fraud, popularly known as “Yahoo Yahoo,” which continues to be a major concern in many parts of Nigeria.
