Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested popular Lagos businessman and socialite, Emeka Okonkwo Daniel, widely known as E-Money, for allegedly violating currency laws by spraying foreign currency and abusing the Naira.
E-Money was reportedly picked up late Monday night at his residence in the Omole area of Lagos and is currently being transported to Abuja for further interrogation.
According to The PUNCH, a senior source within the anti-graft agency, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the arrest followed allegations that the socialite had repeatedly sprayed U.S. dollars at social events, a practice said to contravene the Foreign Exchange Act and the Central Bank’s directive on currency handling.
“Yes, he was arrested at his Omole residence over allegations of Naira abuse and defacing foreign currency, particularly for spraying dollars,” the source confirmed. “Preliminary findings are ongoing, and he will face prosecution once investigations are concluded.”
Another EFCC official added that the decision to fly E-Money to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja was to facilitate a more thorough investigation by relevant units.
At the time of filing this report, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale had not issued an official statement regarding the arrest.
