The Peoples Democratic Party has cautioned the Independent National Electoral Commission against announcing the results of the September 21 governorship election in Edo State without thorough verification.
Acting National Chairman, Illiya Damagum, emphasized the need for vigilance, warning that any attempt to manipulate the election would be resisted, according to Channels TV.
Damagum stressed that the party will defend its votes, urging supporters to vote en masse and protect their ballots.
The Edo election serves as a critical test for Nigeria’s democracy, and any compromise would have severe consequences, Damagum noted.
The PDP seeks transparency, ensuring that results are accurately tallied and announced during the day.
This warning follows controversy surrounding the midnight announcement of the 2023 presidential election results.
The party is concerned about potential discrepancies in results, particularly inconsistencies between figures on EC8 forms and INEC’s iREV platform.
Other PDP leaders, including Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, echoed Damagum’s sentiments, warning against compromising the electoral process and encouraging voters to safeguard their votes.
