In a surprising turn of events, a Magistrates’ Court in Abuja has ordered Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress candidate for the Edo governorship election, to appear in court on September 20, just a day before the election.
The court summons is in response to allegations of age falsification filed by Honesty Aginbatse, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Aginbatse’s petition claims that Okpebholo’s birth dates are listed inconsistently on various documents submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, according to Ripples Nigeria.
Okpebholo’s appearance in court on the eve of the election has raised concerns about his eligibility to run for governor and may impact the outcome of the election.
The APC candidate has yet to comment on the court summons.
