Waldemar Anton struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner to hand Borussia Dortmund a thrilling 3-2 win over TSG Hoffenheim, marking their fifth successive away triumph against the hosts in Bundesliga action and keeping their top-four ambitions alive.
In red-hot form after scoring four goals across his previous two games, Serhou Guirassy needed just 20 minutes to add to his tally.
His initial effort, calmly slotted past Leo Ostigard’s desperate lunge was chalked off for offside, but after a VAR check confirmed that both Guirassy and Daniel Svensson were in fact onside during the buildup, Dortmund’s travelling supporters had an opener to cheer.
Guirassy’s momentum briefly faltered when he failed to convert from the spot after Ostigard’s clumsy foul on Jamie Gittens.
Oliver Baumann proved his reputation as a formidable shot-stopper from 12 yards, diving sharply to his left to deny the Dortmund striker and notch his 16th Bundesliga penalty save.
Hoffenheim almost seized the initiative moments before the break when Anton Stach smashed the ball home, but their celebrations were cut short by an offside call.
Refusing to be discouraged, the hosts eventually found a deserved equaliser after the hour mark. Adam Hlozek expertly controlled the ball on his chest before rifling an unstoppable strike past Gregor Kobel, notching his seventh league goal of the campaign.
Dortmund’s lead was soon restored thanks to a piece of brilliance from Julian Brandt, who showed outstanding technique to volley Svensson’s deep delivery into the far corner.
The visitors seemed destined for disappointment, however, when Pavel Kaderabek nodded home a dramatic equaliser in the first minute of added time.
But in a final breathtaking twist, Waldemar Anton kept his composure to guide the ball into the net.
After a tense VAR review confirmed there was no foul by Gittens on Baumann during the buildup, Dortmund’s celebrations resumed in full force.
The victory moves Niko Kovac’s side to within three points of the coveted top four, while Hoffenheim remain in 15th, five points clear of the relegation zone.
