Veteran Nigerian musician, John Asiemo, popularly known as Daddy Showkey, has condemned Niger State Governor Umar Bago’s directive to arrest individuals sporting dreadlocks in the state capital, Minna.
In an Instagram post on Thursday, Daddy Showkey, who is known for his iconic dreadlocks, questioned the logic behind the governor’s controversial order, asking, “Na dreadlock dey cause insecurity for the country or na dada dey worry you? What of people with mumu beard?”
The musician also revealed that he had planned to visit Minna but was reconsidering his trip in light of the new directive.
“Mohamed Umar, dada be your problem? I dey to come Minna but now you have asked your security agents to cut off dreadlocks, so hold your state, but make you cut your beer beer,” he remarked.
Governor Bago made the directive during a security meeting held at the Government House on Tuesday, where he instructed security agencies to cut the hair of people with dreadlocks and fine them.
However, following significant public backlash, the governor reversed the order, which had been widely criticized by civil rights advocates.
