The Federal High Court has barred the Vehicle Inspection Office from impounding, confiscating, or imposing fines on motorists.
The court’s decision came in response to a suit filed by human rights activist Abubakar Marshal of Falana and Falana Chambers. Justice N.E. Maha delivered the judgment on October 2, 2024, according to Sahara Reporters.
The court declared that the VIO, under the control of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, lacks statutory authority to stop, impound, confiscate, or impose fines on motorists.
Consequently, the court issued an order restraining the VIO and its agents from engaging in these practices.
Additionally, a perpetual injunction was granted to prevent further violations of Nigerians’ rights to freedom of movement, presumption of innocence, and property ownership.
This ruling is seen as a significant victory for motorists and human rights advocates, promoting accountability and respect for citizens’ rights in Nigeria.
