The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, emphasized that citizen engagement is fundamental to a successful legislature and that the 10th House of Representatives is committed to fostering this principle.
He made this statement during a dinner and gala night held to conclude the House Open Week, an initiative that began on July 3, 2024.
In his address, Abbas underscored the significance of the Open Week event, which he described as a demonstration of the vibrancy and strength of Nigeria’s democracy. He expressed that the event reaffirmed the House’s dedication to transparency and accountability in governance.
“Transparency and regular citizens’ engagement are more crucial than ever. We strongly believe that transparency ensures that government actions are open to public scrutiny and fostering accountability,” Abbas stated. He further explained that regular interactions with citizens, like those observed during the Open Week, empower the public to voice their concerns and participate in decision-making processes.
Abbas noted that such engagement fosters a sense of ownership over governance, which in turn strengthens the social contract, rebuilds trust, and revitalizes democratic values. He emphasized that the 10th Assembly has fully embraced the ‘OPEN NASS’ Project as a means to enhance oversight, law-making, and the overall transparency of the National Assembly.
“As we hold other branches of government accountable, we must equally welcome scrutiny from the public. Through the House Open Week, we are reclaiming the legislature for its rightful owners, namely, the citizens and our constituents,” Abbas declared.
Rep. Obi Aguocha, Chairman of the Committee on Monitoring and Evaluation of Standing and Ad Hoc Committees, praised the Open Week as a testament to the power of collaboration and a commitment to democratic ideals. “This ‘Open Week’ aligns with the lofty legislative agenda of the 10th House to serve the Nigerian people with utmost good faith,” Aguocha said.
Additionally, Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited, Mele Kyari, acknowledged the Speaker’s significant contributions to the industry. Kyari commended Abbas for his passionate support of the oil and gas sector, describing him as “exceptional and different in his ways of doing things.” He added, “The industry has been robust all courtesy of the National Assembly.”
The Open Week initiative provided an opportunity for the public to engage directly with their representatives, reinforcing the House’s commitment to an inclusive and transparent legislative process.
