RB Leipzig brought an end to a frustrating nine-match winless streak on the road by edging past a resilient Wolfsburg side 3-2.
The defeat deepened Wolfsburg’s woes, marking their fourth consecutive loss, a slump they haven’t experienced since December 2021.
The home team had a golden opportunity to strike first when a fortunate deflection fell kindly for Jonas Wind inside the box.
However, the out-of-form striker, goalless in his last 11 outings, failed to capitalize, slicing his shot wide of the near post. That missed chance proved costly almost instantly.
Lois Openda took full advantage, launching a low strike from 25 yards out that nestled in the bottom corner — Leipzig’s first Bundesliga away goal in over seven hours of play.
Benjamin Šeško looked to have extended the lead soon after, but VAR intervened, ruling his effort offside.
The reprieve gave Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men some breathing room, and they nearly equalized when Bence Dardai’s smartly flicked header cannoned off the frame of the goal.
But Leipzig continued to push, and their persistence paid off. Arthur Vermeeren surged forward and slipped in Xavi Simons, who rifled home from 20 yards to double the advantage.
Wolfsburg, to their credit, didn’t fold. Peter Gulacsi was called into action to gather a tame Patrick Wimmer header, while Jakub Kamiński came close to scoring after a slick drop of the shoulder allowed him to cut inside and rattle the crossbar from the edge of the area.
Yet, their promising end to the half didn’t carry over into the second. Just minutes after the restart, Simons bagged his brace with a stunning curling effort into the far corner.
Despite the three-goal deficit, Die Wölfe kept battling. Kilian Fischer gave them a lifeline with a breathtaking strike from range that soared over Gulacsi and into the top corner.
That sparked a renewed wave of energy from the hosts, with Mohamed Amoura nearly making it 3-2 twice — first dragging a shot narrowly wide, then forcing Gulacsi into a fingertip save to preserve Leipzig’s lead.
In the end, Leipzig’s clinical finishing proved just enough to survive Wolfsburg’s spirited resurgence and seal a much-needed away victory.
