Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate in 2023 general election, Atiku Abubakar, paid a visit to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari at his Kaduna residence on Friday, April 11.
This comes as a striking twist on Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
He was joined by former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai and ex-Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal, in a meeting that has stirred conversations across the political spectrum.
The notable gathering was brought to public attention by El-Rufai’s associate, Imran Wakili, who posted on X “Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, together with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Aminu Tambuwal, and other dignitaries, visited former President Muhammadu Buhari at his Kaduna residence.
El-Rufai’s endless respect for Buhari is priceless, even with the best effort of Garba Shehu.
Photos of the visit quickly circulated, with Atiku, El-Rufai, Tambuwal, and others seen arriving at Buhari’s residence, fueling speculation on the significance of the meeting.
Though the specifics of their closed-door conversation remain unknown, the timing of the visit is notable, coinciding with mounting political recalibrations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku, El-Rufai, and Labour Party’s Peter Obi have recently come into the spotlight for forming a united front aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu’s re-election prospects.
This new alliance was introduced during a press conference hosted by a group called the Concerned Leaders and Political Stakeholders in Nigeria.
At the event, Atiku affirmed the group’s intent, stating, “We’re building a broad platform to rescue Nigeria,” hinting at a recalibration of Nigeria’s political dynamics.
In a related development, former Social Democratic Party presidential flagbearer Adewale Adebayo revealed that conversations were underway regarding a possible Atiku-Obi alignment under the SDP umbrella.
“If they can embrace our party’s ideology, we can defeat and retire Tinubu and the APC,” Adebayo declared.
Further fanning the flames of speculation, NNPP stalwart Buba Galadima hinted that El-Rufai might serve as a potential placeholder for Atiku in the SDP, should the PDP deny him a shot at its ticket.
As political allegiances realign and fresh coalitions take shape, the countdown to 2027 promises an electrifying contest.
