The All Progressives Congress has strongly condemned the recent local government elections in Plateau State, describing the process as flawed and undemocratic.
The elections, conducted by the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission, saw the People’s Democratic Party win all 17 local government chairmanship seats. The APC secured 14 councillor positions, while the PDP took 285, NNPP 1, and YPP 4, according to Nigerian Tribune.
APC State Chairman, Rufus Bature, addressed the press on Saturday, rejecting the election outcomes and accusing PLASIEC of gross procedural violations. Bature criticized Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s swift swearing-in of PDP candidates as chairmen.
The APC chairman highlighted several irregularities, including unequal distribution of sensitive materials, malfunctioning voting machines, and reported cases of ballot stuffing. Bature alleged that elections did not take place in some areas.
In response, the APC plans to challenge the election results at the Local Government Election Petition Tribunal. The party vows to exhaust all available channels to seek redress.
Despite the controversy, Bature urged APC supporters to remain calm and peaceful. The party’s stance has sparked debate about the credibility of the electoral process in Plateau State.
The development underscores tensions between the APC and PDP in the region, with implications for future elections.
