The Anambra State Government has approved the creation of an agency for missing persons.
According to The PUNCH, this was disclosed through a press statement issued by the State’s commissioner of information, Paul Nwosu, after a State Executive Council meeting on Saturday.
He stated that the Ministry of Justice would serve as the agency’s home office.
He claimed that one of the ways the Truth, Justice, and Peace Commission’s recommendations were fulfilled was by creating the agency.
On February 17, the Commission, which included the chairman, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, Commissioner of Justice, Professor Sylvia Ifemeje, and secretary, Professor Bianca Ojukwu, delivered its final report to Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
The commissioner stated that one of the bureau’s responsibilities was to track down cases of missing people and create the necessary database to aid in police investigations and, if necessary, the prosecution of suspects.
The committee was established on June 23, 2022, by Soludo in response to agitations that caused deaths and property damage in the state and the South-East area.
The committee’s goal is to find a restorative justice approach for truth-telling or actual facts as well as for the healing of violent crime victims.
It was done to explain the players’ culpability and obligation, and to offer conditional mercy to the wrongdoers who repented.
It was also created to handle victims’ restitution for certain losses and rehabilitation to allow restoration of peace and justice as well as the promotion of development in the state.
