The Peoples Democratic Party in Akwa Ibom State has launched a membership registration and reassessment campaign across the state.
The campaign, which commenced on Thursday, May 16, aims to enlist at least six million, nine hundred thousand new members from Akwa Ibom.
In a statement released by the State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Borono Bassey, it was revealed that the State Chairman of the PDP, Elder Aniekan Akpan, flagged off the Membership Registration and Reassessment Campaign during an emergency expanded Exco meeting of the Party. Elder Aniekan Akpan stated that the exercise, mandated by the National body, is aimed at welcoming new members while updating the membership status of existing ones.
“Elder Aniekan Akpan emphasized that the exercise, apart from being a directive of the National body, was a way of opening our doors for new members and updating the membership status of old members,” said Mr. Borono Bassey.
He further added, “Every week, thousands of Akwa Ibom people continue to reach out to members of our party across the different strata, expressing their genuine desire to register as bona fide members of the PDP. Also, every day, we have people who turn 18 and want to belong to our party.”
The registration process involves distributing Membership Registers and Cards to be in the custody of Ward Chairmen across the 369 Wards in Akwa Ibom State. The directive is for Ward Chairmen to register new members and reassess and update the membership status of existing ones at no cost.
“The Governor of our State and Leader of the PDP in Akwa Ibom has cautioned that no Chairman should demand a dime from anyone as a condition for registration and reassessment of membership, and I am sure that the Ward Chairmen, in their usual manner, will heed this directive,” stated Mr. Borono Bassey.
Additionally, the State PDP Chairman reiterated the call for members of other political parties to take advantage of this exercise and return to the PDP fold.
During the meeting, other Party officers expressed optimism that the exercise would be hugely successful, given the total support and commitment from existing Party members.
