The President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has denied reports claiming the Department of State Services has taken over the National Assembly premises to prevent his impeachment.
Akpabio addressed the rumours on the Senate floor, labeling them as “fake news.”
He suggested that those spreading the false information may be motivated by website traffic and potential revenue, according to Politics Nigeria.
The Senate President emphasized that the National Assembly is functioning peacefully, with no evidence to support the alleged DSS takeover or impeachment plot.
Akpabio referred the matter to the Special Duties Committee, tasking them to investigate and report back promptly.
This development comes amid ongoing political tensions in Nigeria. Akpabio’s denial aims to maintain stability and reassure the public. As the leader of the Senate, Akpabio’s statement carries significant weight, and his actions will likely be closely monitored.
The Special Duties Committee’s investigation is expected to provide clarity on the matter. The Nigerian public and political stakeholders await the committee’s findings, which will help to dispel the rumors and ensure the continued smooth functioning of the National Assembly.
“[They said DSS] has surrounded the national assembly to possibly stop the impeachment of principal officers,” he said.
“There is no limit to social media… we are sitting down here doing our work peacefully oblivious of the mischief.
“Which committee do we refer this to?
“I understand that they are being paid if they have a lot of traffic, but I hope the public is aware that this is total fake news.”
Akpabio thereafter referred the matter to the Special Duties Committee, tasking them to report back “as soon as possible.”
