Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has unveiled plans for a new sports facility aimed at nurturing athletic talent and enhancing the state’s sports infrastructure during the 2024 Olympic Day Run on Saturday.
The event, which celebrated the ideals of the Olympic Games, took place at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure and featured a range of activities attended by Olympians, sports enthusiasts, and local athletes.
The Olympic Day Run, a global initiative that promotes physical fitness and the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect, began at the Government House and concluded at the state sports complex. Governor Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelam, used the occasion to outline ambitious plans for the future of sports in Ondo State.
Addressing the attendees, Deputy Governor Adelam stated, “Efforts are on to award the contract for the new stadium at Araromi in Akure to curb the overstretching of facilities at the Ondo State Sports Complex and to enhance sports development in the state.” This new stadium, intended to alleviate the pressures on the current sports complex, will serve as a hub for developing local talent and preparing athletes for international competition.
In addition to the new stadium, the Governor announced that “the contract for the upgrading of Akure township stadium has been awarded by the state government to a reputable contractor to make the facilities meet international standards for the use of the sports-loving people of Ondo State.” This upgrade aims to bring the existing facilities up to global standards, ensuring that they can accommodate and support a wide range of sporting events.
The Governor’s plans also include the development of additional mini-stadiums in Ondo, Ikare, and Ile Oluji. “Other mini-stadiums in Ondo, Ikare and Ile Oluji will also be awarded soon to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people,” he announced, underscoring his administration’s commitment to expanding sports infrastructure across the state.
Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized that his administration remains dedicated to prioritizing sports as a vital avenue for youth engagement and community cohesion. He remarked, “Sports is very dear to our hearts in Ondo and our administration will not relent in its efforts to engage the people in sporting activities for health benefits and as a chosen career where we gainfully employ the youth.”
In his welcome address, Saka Ogunleye, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, highlighted the significance of the Olympic Day Run in fostering global peace through sports. “The extension of the event to Ondo State is a clear indication that sports promote global peace,” Ogunleye said. He reiterated the state’s commitment to enhancing sports facilities and creating opportunities for athletes to compete at national and international levels.
Sylvester Ikuejamoye, representing the Nigeria Olympic Committee, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the role of sports in maintaining physical and mental well-being. “Sporting activities keep the mind and body strong,” Ikuejamoye observed, noting that sports provide a pathway to healthy living and personal growth.
Through these initiatives, the Ondo State government aims to build a robust sports culture that supports athletes and fosters community spirit, aligning with the Olympic values celebrated during the Day Run.
