The Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, has signed the female inheritance bill into law.
Prior to this bill, women were not entitled to inheritance from their father’s family once married. However, following its passage in the Abia State House of Assembly, the inheritance bill will see Abia women inherit and own properties in their father’s family.
The citation for the law is ‘The Female Persons Right of Inheritance of Property Law 2022’.
The governor congratulated the women of Abia state and reinforced his resolve to continue to support them.
The governor also added that his administration would lean on the side of reason and common sense in the discharge of its obligations to residents, noting that women would no longer be treated as second-class citizens even in their families.
According to Ikpeazu, the female inheritance bill is the most important legislation passed by the state house.
He further described the bill as historic, positively disruptive and capable of setting the society on a path of equality of access to opportunities and sustainable development.
