The African Action Congress has condemned the Independent National Electoral Commission for its handling of the recent Edo State gubernatorial election.
In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Femi Adeyeye, the AAC expressed dissatisfaction with widespread voter apathy and irregularities that marred the electoral process, according to Politics Nigeria.
The party alleged that the election failed to meet democratic standards, adding that official reports showed a voter turnout of only 22.45%, indicating widespread disinterest in the process.
The AAC highlighted discrepancies in the numbers, citing an example where 213 accredited voters allegedly cast 352 votes for the All Progressives Congress in a single polling unit.
The party also criticized unequal treatment of political actors during the collation process, referencing a viral video showing the Edo State Governor being escorted out of the collation centre by police while a known militant, Tony Kabaka, remained unchallenged.
Furthermore, the AAC condemned political parties exploiting institutional failures for personal gain, undermining public trust in Nigeria’s democracy and fueling corruption and weak governance.
In response, the AAC called for protests and immediate action to restore fairness and transparency in Nigeria’s elections.
The AAC’s statement comes amidst growing concerns over Nigeria’s electoral process and the need for reforms to ensure credible and fair elections.
“In a particular polling unit result uploaded on INEC’s portal, 213 persons were ‘accredited’ but 352 ‘voted’ APC. What a magic!” the statement read.
