The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assured Nigerians of its commitment to safeguarding their safety and welfare in Libya, following a recent ruling by the Confederation of African Football against the Libyan Football Association.
This reassurance comes in the wake of reports alleging that Nigerians in Libya faced harassment from Libyan authorities after CAF indicted the Libyan FA for mistreating the Nigerian team and officials during a Nations Cup Qualifying Match.
In an official statement issued on Sunday, Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, the Ministry’s spokesperson, confirmed that Nigerians residing in Libya are safe and able to carry out their daily activities without interference.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to protect Nigerians abroad and highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure their security.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to convey that as of the time of making this statement, Nigerians in Libya are going about their daily activities, devoid of any form of harassment by Libyan authorities, following the verdict of the Confederation of African Football which indicted the Libyan Football Association for their ill-treatment of the Nigerian team and officials while in Libya for a Nations Cup Qualifying Match,” the statement read.
The Ministry also emphasized that “the well-being of Nigerian citizens anywhere in the world is a top priority of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and will continue to strive to safeguard it at all times,” reaffirming its dedication to protecting Nigerians across the globe amidst diplomatic challenges.
