The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has forecast hazy weather and thunderstorms in various parts of the country from Tuesday, May 6, through Thursday, May 8, 2025.
In a weather update issued on Monday in Abuja, NiMet projected a mix of dust haze, sunny intervals, and thunderstorms across Nigeria’s regions. The agency said, “Dust haze is expected to affect areas in Katsina and Kano States during the forecast period on Tuesday, while thunderstorms are likely in Taraba and Adamawa States later in the day.”
According to the outlook, the North Central region will experience sunny skies with patches of clouds, with thunderstorms likely in parts of Nasarawa in the morning and in areas like Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by afternoon and evening.
“Cloudy skies with sunny spells will dominate the southern region, with isolated thunderstorms expected in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, and Bayelsa States in the morning,” the agency added. It further noted that states such as Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Abia, Imo, Lagos, and Delta may experience thunderstorms as the day progresses.
NiMet also outlined Wednesday’s forecast, indicating clearer skies with intermittent sunshine in the north and continuing thunderstorms in Taraba and Adamawa States. “Parts of the North Central including Plateau, Benue, Kogi, and Niger are also expected to witness storms later in the day,” it stated.
In the South, early morning thunderstorms are expected in Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers States, while areas such as Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Enugu, and Anambra are likely to experience similar conditions by evening.
By Thursday, the northern region will mostly see sunny conditions with a few clouds, while thunderstorms are forecast over parts of the FCT, Plateau, Kogi, Kwara, and Niger States in the latter part of the day.
“The southern states, including Delta and Bayelsa, may experience morning thunderstorms, with broader storm activity expected later in the day across states like Ekiti, Ogun, Edo, and Cross River,” the agency said.
NiMet advised citizens to take safety precautions due to weather-related risks. “People with respiratory conditions should take extra care due to the presence of dust in the atmosphere. Strong winds may precede rainfall, so residents should secure loose objects and avoid taking shelter under trees,” the agency warned.
The agency also urged drivers to avoid traveling during heavy rainfall and advised airlines to consult NiMet for specific weather reports to ensure safe flight operations.
